Protein related to building muscle?

I have been lifting weights off and on for the last 4-5 years. I aways wanted to get bigger and stronger arms and torso and have followed this ’schedule’ a bodybuilding friend of my mom’s told me about. Beat your muscles up like crazy, wait ’till they’re healed, then beat them up again. It works untill a certain exctend, but never quite gets the desired effect. Now I found out that protein is crucial to building muscle and that does make sense. So on my next trip to the supermarket I’m planning on getting a bunch of protein bars in addition to what I eat. Will that work though, or do I need something like special proteins? I mean I got no clue as what to look for. I am 6′2” and weigh 154 pounds. Close to being underweight as I am, I do have some broad shoulders. Since I beat my muscles up every 3-4 days, how often do I need to eat these bars?
I’m a little dependant on my mother in law right now and I don’t expect her to drive all over town. Will Wal-Mart carry this mucle milk or any other good protein shakes?

I have no idea what you mean by beat your muscles, so ill just skip commenting about your workout routine.

As far as protein, definitely buy protein powder instead of protein bars. Powder works much better and is a lot cheaper. You can get some from GNC or online.

For your weight, I would recommend buying Muscle Milk protein powder since it will help bulk you up more then normal protein powders.

Drink a serving of protein when you wake up, after workout, and right before you sleep. That will be how you get the best results.

And ignore the guy who said it will be bad for you, if you are serious about building muscle you should have 1g of protein for every lb of body weight, but that is pretty hard to do, so I wouldnt worry so much about overdoing it.

Protein shakes may actually get more protein in you, and be less expensive if you get a big thing at GNC or a store like it. It’s best to have protein in the 30 -45 minutes after your workout. Some people also like to have some before they work out, to help fuel their muscles.

first of all, protein bars are usually much more expensive then investing in a tub of protein power available at many general and fitness stores in any city. try and look for the larger protein to grams per scoop ratio [34 grams of protein for 40 gram scoop is desirable] you should intake protein within 30 minutes after physical activity for the best absorption rate and a liquid form [powder mixed in with water or milk] will aid this way. try to stick to a whey protein as it usually has the highest absorption rate, and look for a good proprietary blend of amino acids in the protein. eat every 2-3 hours a diet rich in protein, low in fat and remember cardio!

Scrap your routine. If you have been lifting for 4-5 years and only weigh 154 lbs you need to adapt. You are an ectomorph and must train like one. Try a bill star 5×5 or a rippetoes for about 3 months. And see what happens. You probably also need to eat more. Eat to get big lift to get strong. If you don’t eat excess calories you won’t gain weight. Try to get at least 3500-4000 calories per day. Milk should help you. Also look at pre and post work out nutrition. Walmart, sams club and ebay have the cheapest protein. Search the bodybuilding.com forums.
